Gardening & lawns across the Northern Beaches

Gardens here run from pocket courtyards behind Manly apartments to terraced harbour slopes and bush blocks that merge into national park. Buffalo and kikuyu lawns grow hard through the humid summer and need mowing often, lilly pilly and murraya hedges want shaping several times a year, and coastal banksias, westringia and other salt-tolerant natives do the heavy lifting near the water. Gums and angophoras drop leaves, bark and gumnuts without pause, gutters and garden beds fill with litter, and on the exposed ocean side wind burn and salt strip anything tender. Steep gardens add retaining walls, stairs and the problem of getting clippings back up to the street.

Vetted gardening tradies handle mowing, edging, hedge trimming, pruning, weeding, mulching, planting and seasonal clean-ups, and cart green waste to a licensed facility or the council's recovery centre at Kimbriki rather than leaving it. Trees are the boundary. Northern Beaches Council protects trees of five metres or taller, so removal or pruning beyond about ten per cent of the canopy in a year needs a council permit, and the council does not grant one for views or leaf drop. A gardener will tell you when a job has become tree work and needs council sign-off and, for large trees, a qualified arborist. Chemicals near waterways and bushland are used with care.

Say whether you need a once-off tidy or a standing arrangement, give the size and slope of the garden, hedge heights and any access issues such as stairs or no side gate. Gardening tradies already working nearby receive it; whoever takes it gets in touch and prices the work, usually after a quick look. For regular care the quote should set a visit frequency, what each visit covers and how green waste is removed. The match costs the homeowner nothing, and any quote can be declined. Mowing and hedging slow in winter and pick up from spring, so standing arrangements often adjust with the season.

Frequently asked questions

Only a small one. Trees under five metres can generally be removed without a permit, as can those within two metres of an approved building, but anything larger needs Northern Beaches Council approval, and heritage trees always do. Large removals are arborist work with proper rigging and insurance, which we treat as a separate job.

Westringia, coastal rosemary cultivars, lilly pilly in sheltered spots, and coast banksia or tuckeroo for height all tolerate the exposure. Murraya and photinia struggle in direct spray. A gardener who works your stretch of coast will know what is surviving in neighbouring gardens.

It is common on the Beaches and gardeners plan for it. Lightweight battery mowers and trimmers, bagged clippings carried up in stages and a staging spot near the street all help. Mention how many levels and stairs there are in your post, so the extra time is priced in.

The tradie carts it away to a licensed facility or the council tip, or mulches it and spreads it on your beds if you prefer. Your green bin takes the small amounts in between. Leaving garden waste in bushland reserves is illegal dumping, so it never goes over the back fence.
