Trades on the North Shore
The North Shore stretches from the harbour peninsulas of Kirribilli, Neutral Bay, Cremorne and Mosman up the railway line to Wahroonga. Near the water, Federation houses share their streets with walk-up flats and newer apartment blocks, and Hunters Hill keeps sandstone cottages that date from the 1840s. Northbridge and Castlecrag sit on Middle Harbour, where Walter Burley Griffin laid out his 1920s estate. Beyond Chatswood the railway suburbs take over: Lindfield, Killara, Gordon, Pymble, St Ives, Turramurra and Wahroonga grew around stations opened in 1890, and their Federation, Arts and Crafts and interwar houses sit on deep blocks under tall trees. The two halves ask different things of a tradie, which is why we match by suburb rather than by region.
Salt is the Lower North Shore's constant. Sea air drifts up from Balmoral, Cremorne Point and Kurraba Point and settles on glass, render, gutters and metal fixings, so harbour-facing homes need washing more often than inland ones. Sandstone is everywhere, in retaining walls, steps, house bases and garden paths, and it stains, grows moss on its shaded faces and crumbles under high pressure. Further north the dominant force is the canopy. Blue gums, turpentines, jacarandas and liquidambars drop leaves, bark and pollen onto roofs, gutters, decks, pools and driveways through the year, and the shade they cast keeps south-facing walls damp enough for mould. Steep blocks add problems of their own: long driveways, stairs instead of paths, and roofs that are three storeys up at the back.
Six councils share the region: North Sydney, Mosman, Willoughby, Lane Cove, Hunter's Hill and Ku-ring-gai, with Hornsby Shire touching the northern edge. Mosman lists 13 heritage conservation areas, most of Hunter's Hill sits inside one, and North Sydney wants written approval before exterior painting, re-roofing or new windows on listed homes and in its conservation areas. Each council protects trees above its own size limits, so pruning or removal usually needs a permit. Along Military Road and around the Junctions most residents live in strata, and anything on common property, from a facade wash to the outside of a window, needs the owners corporation's consent, normally arranged through the strata manager. NSW pollution law also applies to every wash job: detergents, paint flakes and sediment must be kept out of the stormwater drains.
Start with the quote form: suburb, type of property, and a couple of photos if you have them. It goes out to vetted, independent tradies with a track record on that part of the North Shore; they then get in touch and quote directly. Nobody in the network receives a job until the same six checks are done: photo ID against a live ABN, the relevant licence if the job is licensable, a public liability policy still in force, photos and referees from recent work, a signed undertaking on written quotes and conduct, and homeowner feedback afterwards. For homeowners the service is free, and hiring is never obligatory. If the work turns out to involve plumbing or electrical wiring, we match it with a licensed trade.

Frequently asked questions
The Lower North Shore pages cover Mosman, Cremorne, Neutral Bay, Kirribilli, Northbridge, Castlecrag, Hunters Hill and Lane Cove. The Upper North Shore pages cover the railway suburbs from Lindfield through Killara, Gordon, Pymble and St Ives to Turramurra and Wahroonga. Each suburb page describes the local housing and conditions and links to the categories available there.
Neither. We are a matching service. You describe the job; vetted, independent tradies working in your suburb are offered it; whoever you pick then quotes and contracts with you, insured in their own name, working as a business in their own right. Our part is the vetting and the introduction.
No tradie gets a North Shore job from us before their photo ID has been matched to an active ABN, their licence run through the NSW public register if the work needs one, a current certificate of currency for public liability insurance sighted, photos and references from recent jobs examined, and their agreement given to written quotes, to their duties under Australian Consumer Law and to our code of conduct. Every match ends with a question to the homeowner about how it went, and that feedback keeps the list honest.
Cleaning and routine maintenance usually do not need approval, but heritage controls are widespread here, from Mosman's conservation areas to Ku-ring-gai's railway suburbs. If your home is listed or sits inside a conservation area, talk to council before changing the exterior, whether repainting, new fencing or a different roof finish. The tradie will tell you if they think a question needs asking.
Yes. Jobs contained within your lot, an under-sink filter say, or a flat-pack, or a lock, are normally yours to decide. The building's exterior, the outer face of the windows and any shared driveway count as common property; those go to the owners corporation, which the strata manager usually handles, before a tradie starts.
A posted job costs the homeowner nothing and binds them to nothing. Matched tradies contact you directly, inspect or ask for photos, and give you a written quote in their own name. Compare quotes on scope and inclusions as well as price, and remember that Australian Consumer Law protections, including due care and skill, cover any service you accept.
