Rubbish removal

The jobs

Rubbish removal requests come in every size. Single sofas and mattresses from apartments in Bondi, Manly and Cremorne where lifts and loading zones matter. Garage, shed and under-house clear-outs from family homes in Lindfield, Collaroy and Rose Bay. Green waste after garden overhauls in Wahroonga and Avalon Beach. Renovation waste, old kitchens and bathroom strip-outs from Paddington terraces with no rear access. Deceased estate and downsizing clearances from long-held homes across all three regions, which need patience and tact as much as a truck. Steep blocks in Seaforth and Whale Beach add stairs to everything.

Rubbish removal is not a licensed trade, but waste law is strict. We start with ID matched to ABN, a public liability certificate of currency, local work photos and references, and then go further. We ask which licensed facilities you use for general waste, green waste, metal, mattresses, e-waste and whitegoods, whether you can produce disposal receipts, how your vehicles are registered and insured, and what you do when you find fibro or other suspected asbestos in a load. The answer we need is that asbestos never goes in a general load and is handled only by trained people to a facility licensed to take it. Illegal dumping ends a place in the network immediately.

Homeowners expect a quote that covers loading, transport and disposal with no surprises on the day, careful handling through hallways and lifts, floors and walls protected, the area swept afterwards and a clear answer about where the load is going. On deceased estates they expect you to slow down, set aside documents, photographs and valuables, and help usable items reach charities. They value punctuality and a crew that is polite to neighbours in tight streets. Those are the things our post-job feedback asks about.

What we check for this trade

Identity and ABN: We see photo identification and match it to an active Australian Business Number on ABN Lookup, confirming the trading name, entity type and that the ABN is current. This tells you the person quoting is who they say they are and is running a real business that can be held to account. Sole traders, partnerships and companies are all welcome; anonymous operators are not.
Licence check where the work needs one: In NSW, residential building work worth more than 5,000 dollars in labour and materials, including GST, needs a Building Commission NSW contractor licence, and plumbing, drainage, gasfitting, electrical and air conditioning work need one at any value. Most house washing, window cleaning, gardening, rubbish removal and small handyman jobs do not; water filter plumbing always does. Where a licence applies we check it on the NSW public register and confirm it covers the class of work.
Public liability insurance: Every tradie provides a current certificate of currency for public liability insurance, and we record the policy limit and expiry. A network minimum is being set. This cover is for damage or injury caused by the tradie's work; it is not a warranty on the quality of the job, which is covered by your contract and the Australian Consumer Law. We ask for the renewed certificate each year.
Work history: We ask for photos of recent jobs in these suburbs and two references we can call, or an equivalent track record for tradies new to the area with a history elsewhere. We are looking for work like the jobs homeowners post here, done to a standard, on the kinds of properties found in Vaucluse, Mosman or Avalon Beach. A new ABN with no history is not a bar, but it will be asked for more.
Conduct: Before listing, tradies agree in writing to quote in writing, to meet their obligations under the Australian Consumer Law, and to our code of conduct: turn up when you said you would, leave the site clean, no pressure selling. They also agree to the legal basics that come up in this work, such as keeping wash water out of stormwater, not disturbing asbestos and working safely at height.
Ongoing: Vetting does not stop at listing. After each match we ask the homeowner how it went: did the tradie turn up, was the quote honoured, was the work as described, was the site left tidy. We follow up complaints with the tradie, we check licences and insurance as they fall due for renewal, and tradies who fall short are removed from the network.

Frequently asked questions

No trade licence applies, though your vehicles must be properly registered and insured and your waste must go to lawful facilities. Transporting asbestos waste has its own rules, including EPA tracking above set quantities, and is only for operators set up to do it. We ask about all of this on the verification call.

Every load to a licensed facility, sorted into streams where you can, with receipts available if the homeowner asks. Dumping, burning or abandoning waste by a road or in bushland is an offence under NSW law and would remove you from the network without discussion.

Yes, and we flag them so you know before you quote. They take longer than a standard clear-out, involve family members and sometimes charities, and call for discretion. Tell us when you apply whether you take estate clearances.

Usually. Homeowners are asked to post photos of the pile and notes on access, stairs, lifts and parking. For large estates or renovation sites a site visit is sensible before you commit to a price. Either way the quote should be in writing before the truck arrives.
