Driveway & concrete sealing across the Eastern Suburbs
Driveways in the Eastern Suburbs work hard. Along the ridges of Bellevue Hill, Vaucluse and Dover Heights they are long and steep, and many were poured in coloured concrete or exposed aggregate in the 1990s and 2000s. Sun fades the colour, tyres scrub the high-traffic strip and leaf litter from figs and gums leaves tannin shadows. In Paddington, Woollahra and Randwick, sandstone flagging, clay pavers and crazy paving sit on older houses and draw salt up from the ground as white efflorescence. Near the water, salt spray adds to the same problem from above. A penetrating sealer slows all of it, and on a slope the right product keeps the surface grippy in rain.
Good sealing is mostly preparation. The tradie cleans the surface, removes oil and tannin stains, treats efflorescence, strips any failed film-forming sealer and lets the slab dry before coating. On steep drives they choose a penetrating or low-sheen product and can add an anti-slip additive. Cleaning run-off carrying sediment or stripper cannot enter the stormwater system under NSW law, so it is captured or diverted onto garden beds. Sandstone kerbs and original paving in heritage conservation areas should be retained rather than replaced, so check with council before changing materials. A shared strata driveway needs the owners corporation's approval, and cars have to be parked elsewhere during curing.
To post the job, take photos of the driveway from the footpath and from the top, note the surface type if you know it, the approximate length and whether it slopes, and mention any oil, rust or leaf stains. We match it with vetted sealing tradies based around your suburb. They get in touch, look at the surface, and quote in writing with the preparation steps, the product, the number of coats, the drying time between coats and how long to keep cars off. Weather matters, so expect a window rather than a fixed day. Compare the quotes and choose; the service costs homeowners nothing.

Frequently asked questions
Not when the product is matched to the slope. Penetrating sealers soak in and leave the texture unchanged, and film-forming sealers can be mixed with an anti-slip additive. Tell the tradie the gradient when you post the job and ask what they recommend for a slope that gets rain and leaf litter.
Foot traffic is usually fine within hours, but vehicles should stay off until the sealer has cured, which depends on the product, temperature and humidity. The quote should state the expected cure time. On narrow streets in Woollahra or Paddington, plan where the cars will go for that period before the work is booked.
Routine cleaning and a breathable penetrating sealer are generally treated as maintenance, but replacing stone, changing the finish or altering fences and kerbs can need council approval in Woollahra, Waverley or Randwick conservation areas. Check with council first, and ask the tradie to use a breathable product that does not leave a film on the stone.
Sealing stops. Most products need a dry surface and a dry period afterwards, so tradies watch the forecast and may move the day. Preparation such as cleaning and stain removal can go ahead in light weather, with the sealing coats following once the slab has dried out.
